When I first obtained my copy of Learning To See and learned about Value Stream Mapping, it rang bells in my head that continue to ring
to this day. Despite its simplicity, this method is unlike anything being taught in an Industrial Engineering (IE) curriculum today. It
integrates and extends numerous IE concepts and tools that have not been improved for years by IEs themselves!
However, all attempts to extend this method to jobshops, which have complex networks of interacting value streams due to their diverse
product mix, failed. So, by mixing my frustration with the natural desire of a researcher to improve on any method, I began to develop my
method - Value Network Mapping.
Then, later this year, due to lack of funds for travel, a team of undergraduates found itself unable to present their award-winning poster
at the Annual IIE Conference. That gave me the idea to create this report and donate earnings from its sales to the Alpha Pi Mu and IIE student
chapters in our department.
I am most grateful to the many students whose research and industry projects under my supervision helped to produce the presentations and
papers contained in this report. I hope that this report assists jobshops and other small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to adopt a
strategic planning method for deployment of Jobshop Lean (JSLean).
