A Program to Initiate JobshopLean at Bula Forge & Machine, Inc. (DVD)

Lean Thinking, a strategy based on the best practices of the Toyota Production System, is a hot topic these days. It is best implemented by experts who previously worked at Toyota or were trained by Toyota's sensei's. But, is it possible for a high-mix low-volume SME (small manufacturing enterprise) to master Lean and develop an in-house customized training program by partnering with an academic institution? The answer is: Yes! This DVD presents the first-hand experiences of a team of managers in a small jobshop - Bula Forge & Machine Inc. - located in Cleveland, OH, that followed an affordable and customized approach - A Quick-Start Approach for JobshopLean - to learn about and implement a new "flavor" of Lean in their custom forge shop. Based on interviews with different members of Team Bula who participated in this project, this DVD includes:
  • An introduction to Bula Forge & Machine, Inc.
  • The first reactions to Lean from the members of Team Bula when this project began, and what the same managers had to say about Lean when this project ended
  • How Bula Forge & Machine, Inc. started their Lean journey by participating in the LEAP (Learn→Earn→Apply→Practice) Internship Program at The Ohio State University
  • Comments on the overlaps and differences between ToyotaLean and JobshopLean
  • Guidance on how to adopt, adapt or replace methods and tools of the Toyota Production System when dealing with the high-variety low-volume environment of a jobshop
  • Guidance on how to use Value Stream Mapping integrated with Theory Of Constraints to identify improvement projects
  • Structure and content of the training program that was delivered to Team Bula
  • Results and benefits achieved from the project
  • Barriers and challenges encountered during the project
This DVD is based on work done for the Flexible Forge Shop Design project(http://fdmc.aticorp.org/) funded by the Defense Logistics Agency and the Forging Defense Manufacturing Consortium (FDMC) managed by the Advanced Technology Institute.
